A ‘proud’ Rafael Leao has understood how big Milan are thanks to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paolo Maldini, but the Portugal international also praises Olivier Giroud and Christian Pulisic: ‘I don’t even need to look at them.’

Leao contributed to Milan’s 3-1 win over Slavia Praha in the Europa League Round of 16 second leg on Thursday with a stunning curler from outside the box and an assist for USMNT star Pulisic.

Leao now has ten goals and ten assists across all competitions this season, so Sky Sport asked him after the match if this is the best moment for him in 2023-24.

“I think so; I am getting along with Giroud and Pulisic. I feel well, and the whole team feels well,” he replied as quoted by Milannews.

“My work is to help the team, even when I don’t score or assist. I am happy with myself, but the whole team is doing well.”

How important has Stefano Pioli been for him?

“As I always say, he’s the person who helps me the most,” Leao replied.

“Over the last three years, he has understood how to help me make a difference. This is a good moment, thanks to him too.”

Leao didn’t play much on the wing against Slavia.

“It depends on the games,” admitted the striker.

“Sometimes, I can stay on the wing; other times, I must play in the middle. I am 24, I understand the game better. I am in sync with Pulisic and Giroud. I don’t even need to look at them because I already know where they are inside the box.

“Then there’s Theo behind me, who is an extra weapon. Everyone’s helping me be a better player, and Pioli leaves me calm by saying, ‘Enter the pitch and have fun.'”

Is there any club he wants to pick in Friday’s Europa League quarter-final draw?

“I don’t, but we know we’ll face important clubs,” Leao replied.

“The objective is always the same. We want to go as far as possible in the competition.”

How much ‘Milanista’ does he feel?

“100%, obvious,” he admitted.

“I am lucky to have Ibra, a champion who’s been helping me. He didn’t show me the qualities I had, but he made me understand what Milan meant. He and Maldini made me understand how big Milan are. As a kid, I used to watch the Milan champions and when you are here, it’s another story. I am proud to play for this club and I am happy here.”

Leao signed a contract extension at the Stadio Meazza until June 2028 last summer and has a €175m clause included in his deal with the Rossoneri. The 24-year-old has scored 53 goals in 198 appearances with the Serie A giants
