Rafael Leao is passed fit to start for Milan against Newcastle United in the Champions League showdown, but the problems remain in defence.

It kicks off at St. James’ Park on Wednesday at 20.00 GMT.

In order to remain in the competition and reach the Round of 16, the Rossoneri must both win this match and hope that Paris Saint-Germain also lose to Borussia Dortmund.

Rafael Leao has been out of action since suffering a thigh strain in the opening minutes of the 2-2 draw away to Lecce on November 11.

Tests showed the lesion was fully healed this week, but he did not make the trip to Bergamo for Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Atalanta.

In order to be sure he was fully fit, coach Stefano Pioli organised a friendly match in training today and Leao passed with flying colours.

He will therefore start in Newcastle, with Olivier Giroud and Christian Pulisic.

The problems remain in defence, as Simon Kjaer again trained separately today and is unlikely to even be on the bench.

It means Fikayo Tomori is the only available centre-back, with Malick Thiaw, Pierre Kalulu and Mattia Caldara injured.

Noah Okafor and Marco Sportiello are also out of action.

Theo Hernandez has been used as a makeshift central defender for the last two games, with Alessandro Florenzi on the left.

Newcastle United also have a lengthy injury list to deal with, including Callum Wilson, Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barns, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff, Matt Targett, Elliott Anderson, Sven Botman and goalkeeper Nick Pope.
