Rafael Leao’s lawyer has broken his silence to assure his ‘priority has not changed, he wants to stay at Milan’ and outright denies reports he tried to lower the release clause.

The Portugal international is only under contract until June 2024 and has been heavily linked with clubs including Chelsea, Manchester City, PSG and Real Madrid.

The report in La Gazzetta dello Sport yesterday that talks had broken down because Leao asked to halve the €120m release clause prompted an angry denial from the club and now from the player’s lawyer too.

“There are many false and misleading informations about Rafael Leao, mainly in Italian press,” Ted Dimvula told Sky Sport Italia transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano.

“This has only one aim: to parasitize cordial and professional exchange that we have with AC Milan management regarding the extension of Rafael’s contract.

“We are currently working together to find a satisfactory solution for all parties. The player’s priority has not changed: he wants to stay at AC Milan and continue to grow and progress in this institution and this city that he loves so much.

“We therefore firmly deny any desire on the part of Rafael and/or his entourage to lower his release clause in order to facilitate a departure of the player next summer.

“Rafael is fully focused on the important goals to come with his current club and wishes, in this difficult period, to be able to work in calm and serenity in order to get back to winning.”

Leao was dropped to the bench for the most recent Serie A match, a 5-2 defeat to Sassuolo, following poor performances and that was immediately followed by the reports of disagreements over the release clause.

That clause is currently only valid for a few weeks over the summer and for clubs outside of Italy.
