Milan star Rafael Leao and Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio are the Italian representatives at the World Cup in Qatar for Portugal, along with a few former Serie A stars including Cristiano Ronaldo, but there’s no room for Mario Rui.
They are in Group H for the tournament and will begin against Ghana on November 24, then Uruguay on November 28, concluding with South Korea on December 2.
As expected, Milan striker and Serie A Player of the Year Rafael Leao is included, along with Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio.
However, Napoli left-back Mario Rui is left out along with Udinese centre-forward Beto, despite being present in the 55-man longlist.
Mario Rui had been tipped to participate in the competition, considering Napoli are top of the Serie A table and won their Champions League group.
The 31-year-old only has 12 senior caps for Portugal, but has been on excellent club form with six assists in 14 games.
That earned him a recall and he played the full 4-0 Nations League win over the Czech Republic in September.
There are quite a few former Serie A players involved, including Joao Mario, Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Joao Cancelo, Andre Silva and Cristiano Ronaldo.
