Reports in Italy claim Rafa Benitez has snubbed Salernitana‘s offer, so Roberto D’Aversa is now the leading candidate to replace Davide Nicola, but Stefano Colantuono or Franck Ribery could go on the bench against Napoli.

Nicola was sacked on Monday after an 8-2 loss against Atalanta. However, Football Italia understands unity between the coach and the board was lost due to different views over the club’s targets this term.

Salernitana don’t have a replacement ready and ex-Napoli, Inter and Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez was among the first coaches contacted by the Granata.

However, Sky Sport Italia and Il Corriere dello Sport report the 62-year-old has turned down an offer from the Stadio Arechi.

Talks with Roberto D’Aversa are ongoing, but according to Sky Sport Italia, the Italian tactician wants an 18-month contract, while the club have offered a deal until the end of the season with an option to extend until 2024.

D’Aversa is still under contract with Sampdoria.

Salernitana meet Napoli on Saturday and it’s not guaranteed they will appoint a coach before the derby.

Therefore, according to Il Corriere di Mezzogiorno. Stefano Colantuono, who is still part of the club as responsible for the youth sector, could go on the bench against the Partenopei, even if the Naples-based paper also mentions Franck Ribery as one of the options.

Although it sounds fascinating, the French legend doesn’t have the coaching badges required to guide the team in competitive matches, so he could only guide the team from the touchline with another qualified coach.
