Inter President Steven Zhang has insisted that racism is not in his club’s DNA and pledged to talk to Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku was racially abused by Cagliari fans before the international break, but their behaviour was shockingly justified by Nerazzurri ultras, who claimed monkey chants were merely a form of intimidation.

“In the DNA of our club, there’s the fight against violence, racism and all other forms of discrimination,” Zhang told Associated Press.

“Indeed, in this sense, football should educate people around the world. I’ll talk to Lukaku when he returns from his commitments with his national team.

“Inter were founded on the principles of inclusiveness and internationality. We’ve always been open to people of all cultures, nationalities and skin colours.

“These characteristics are part of the Nerazzurri DNA and always will be. I hope incidents of racism will diminish until they disappear, both in Italy and the rest of the world.

“Football must be fun, not a spot for racism.”
