An investigation has been opened in Serie B after Pisa player Michele Marconi was accused of making a racist remark towards Chievo’s Joel Obi.

The alleged incident occurred during yesterday’s game between the two clubs.

Chievo released a statement condemning Marconi for mentioning “the revolt of the slaves” and showing ‘full solidarity’ towards midfielder Obi, claiming the phrase was ‘heard by several others on the field, but the referee, assistant and fourth official did not take any action.’

Pisa also issued a statement, in which they assure Marconi ‘denies making any offensive comment towards his opponent, let alone a racist one.’

Obi, a 29-year-old Nigeria international, has been in Italy since 2005 in the Inter youth academy, playing also for Parma, Torino and Chievo.
