There are four teams within a three-point radius fighting for two Europa League spots and one in the Conference League, so head-to-head records could be decisive for Lazio, Atalanta, Roma and Fiorentina.

After the Viola beat the Giallorossi 2-0 this evening at the Stadio Franchi, that left Lazio alone in fifth place on 62 points, followed by Atalanta, Roma and Fiorentina all on 59 with two rounds left to play.

As things stand, fifth and sixth go into the Europa League group stage, with seventh heading for the Conference League play-offs.

If Roma win the Conference League and finish seventh, then three Italian clubs will go into the Europa League.

In Serie A when two or more teams are level on points, the head-to-head record is the first way of deciding position, followed by goal difference in the head-to-head.

If that too is level, it goes to overall goal difference, goals scored or eventually drawing lots.

The situation is slightly different if more than two teams are level, because then a ‘Classifica Avulsa’ is drawn up – a mini-league table of their results against each other.

With that in mind, it’s worth looking at their head-to-head records.

Lazio 62 points

Inferior to Roma (3 points each, but -2 goal difference)

Superior to Fiorentina (6 points)

Totally even with Atalanta in points and goal difference (2 points, 2 goals each)

Roma 59 points

Superior to Lazio (3 points each, but +2 goal difference)

Totally even with Fiorentina (3 points each, same goal difference)

Superior to Atalanta (6 points)

Fiorentina 59 points

Inferior to Lazio (0 points)

Totally even with Roma (3 points each, same goal difference)

Superior to Atalanta (6 points)

Atalanta 59 points

Totally even with Lazio (2 points, 2 goals each)

Inferior to Fiorentina (0 points)

Inferior to Roma (0 points)

4 thought on “Race for European places: Separating Lazio, Roma, Fiorentina and Atalanta”
  1. Well sorry Atalanta, but your European dream ends at the San Siro on Sunday Milan has a Scudetto to win! Roma may win the Conference League so most Likely Roma and Lazio in Europa next year and Fiorentina in Conference League. Good season by La Viola. I do hope Atalanta stick with Gasperini and keep us entertained great club!

  2. If anything, Roma should finish in 8th and win the conference league so Serie A would have 8 teams in Europe – at least that what I think will happen in that scenario.

  3. No Geedup remember what happened when Villareal won the EL Spain basically had no teams in the Conference League and 3 in the EL. I think that’s what will happen here the 7th place team if Roma finish 8th will not play in Europe.
