Gigio Donnarumma has been accused of being arrogant after his post-match comments last night and the journalist that interviewed him after the game has stepped into the debate: ‘Questions must be asked.’

The Azzurri suffered a 5-2 loss against Germany last night and Gigio gifted the fifth and final goals to the Germans with a wrong pass inside Italy’s penalty box. The 22-year-old looked annoyed when questioned about his mistakes with the ball at his feet after the game.

“When did it happen before? When I was fouled against Real Madrid?” the goalkeeper replied.

“If we want to cause controversy over these things, then fine, I am here to talk for the team. If you want to blame me, fine, I’ll take the blame, I am the captain and I keep going with head held high.

“I think you’re all trying to create something about these errors, fine.”

Donnarumma shoulders Italy rage: ‘If you want to blame me, go ahead’

Donnarumma is being criticised by all Italian media because of his reaction.

Calciomercato.com called him ‘arrogant’ and La Gazzetta dello Sport’s editor-in-chief Stefano Agresti suggested that the 22-year-old should ‘change his attitude’ when he has the ball at his feet and accept criticism off the pitch.

Sandro Piccinini, one of the most prominent Italian journalists, commented on the goalkeeper’s reaction saying that he is ‘unable to understand his errors’ while praising Rai Sport journalist Tiziana Alla who interviewed Gigio after the game.

The reporter replied on Twitter, saying: “Thanks, Sandro. It means a lot said from you. You know how difficult it is to manage these situations. I’ve never been looking for useless controversies, but, in this job, there are questions that must be asked.”

  1. Glad he left Milan, He cant do anything with his feet. I was at Wembley for the match against Argentina and I remember him almost letting in that goal which he rescued in the last few inches. Its so bad watching him.
Milan did well to let him go.

  2. Donnarumma is still a child I see.
    Pathetic whiny child.
He probably said to the journalists that he was gonna tell his mommy on them.

Suck it up…learn from your errors, get better, you might be a top 10 keeper right now.

Thats impressive….keep going instead of being whiny arrogant

  3. Come on, FI. Get your messaging system straightened out. Another CLEAN, topic related, message of mine not coming through. You’re brutal.

  4. What has Italy learnt from all these 4 games ?

Pelagrini, chiesa ,berradi ,insigne and jao Pedro ,are Italy’s best players . You can add Bonaventura, castrovilli and berrella also ,

  5. @Nuetral

That’s an odd list of players as Italy’s best.

I think there are a few more and the list is long with players with potential.
Now comes the time to weed out the starters from the benchwarmers from the “all hype”.

I’m sorry to say it, but Immobile needs to be on the bench at most but perhaps off the squad all together. He just can’t translate his successes to the National Team and he’s had plethora of chances. Even when the team was clicking, he just could not pull it off.

  6. I think he should learn to use his leg like Maignan, he made tons of these mistakes all the at time at Milan.

Moreover, i dont understand all these wholesome changes by Mancini.
You dont play these type of matches with changes like this, we cant change the team at a go, its a gradual process.

All these senior players are still needed, you wean then down gradually or else you gonna win against some teams but get destroyed by others.

  7. I’m a proud Italian. Always will be. Bit let’s face it it’s not the coach fault/ players fault. It’s that Italy doesn’t have talent players period.
I believe Italian football is at its lowest point in history. Forget about 86/02 /08. We are in bad shape. We just don’t have anyway players above average. And sad part it’s going be like this for many years. The under national teams 21/18/17 are below average. Maybe just maybe bit of hope is the under 16
You can’t be a great team if you don’t have great talent. Heart only brings you so far.

  8. Gee, funny you say that you’re “glad” that he left when you couldn’t help yourselves from booing him at the San Siro. Pathetic action from pathetic fans.

  9. First Italian players need more play time with their teams. Serie A needs and must change, today 8 players on the pitch playing are all foreigners.
Second Mancini went so wild with his changes, he must change gradually. The only change must have done is on the strikers line because we were not scoring goals but in the midfield and defensive lines we must change gradually. Also why he doesn’t try new goal keepers and always goes with Donnarumma ?

  10. @ Pietro

We couldn’t be more glad he left and we got Maignan, but guess what, he’s still gonna get booed again when England comes to San Siro 😄

That’s just the way it is. Deal with it.

  11. I agree with many of these guys, Italy are in a transitional phase, yes we should slowly introduce the youngsters mixed in with some of our defence & midfield, however I do agree about trying out new strikers as we do struggle scoring goals.

  12. Milan Fan – I’m sorry but if Milan fans boo Donnarumma in Italy they are essentially saying we prefer our club team to our national team. With that said I understand he left on horrible terms but he wasn’t the first and certainly won’t be the last. That’s just the way it works in football, especially when there’s a lot money involved.

  13. Milan Fan – you’re such a miserable group. Cognitive dissonance at its peak.

I’m looking forward to some other ultras to put your boys in their place.

  14. The journalist was only doing his job right. How would Dollar feel if a journalist goes crazy angry at him for doing his job right like playing the ball out good one day!

  15. Every time Donna does something wrong, Italian fans attack Milan fans. Even if Donna gets a speed ticket it’s the fault of Milan fans.

  16. We just won a major European championship but Italian football is supposedly in an emergency.
We’ve had 2 finals since 2006 and could’ve won the Euros in 2016 if it wasn’t for some dodgy penalty kicks.
Think we need to stop being so defeatist/black pilled.

  17. Let’s be honest, Donnarumma has never been great with the ball at his feet, and his distribution is marginal. He has gotten substantially worse, not better, at this skill. Not sure if he will ever overcome this deficit.

  18. he’s just a silly boy going out of his depth. Milan made him and their were protecting him also. he chose to follow the money. he believed he was ready. i don’t care about his loyalty. he could have been an idol, he thought he was bigger than that. yes he is arrogant at that young age. he shows no respect, no humility. everything should be handed to him for ‘some reason’. still these are his life and careers choices..what i don’t get is why he’s Italy’s captain…

  19. Until labour laws change (italy out of EU aboveall), so-called ‘growth decree’ cancelled, and aboveall, clubs stop being sold to Americans and Asians, this will continue to happen.

But what do we hear as the #1 issue? Stadiums. LOL !

Turkey have better stadiums than us ao what’s their excuse for being trash?

Having better stadiums only so the foriegn players have a nicer stadium to play in. Still means no Italian players playing in ‘A’.

Want to reward teams? First Team players and players in the Starting Lineup from that teams Youth Academy get rewarded.

You watch how things change then.

  20. Seems like Tony and Peter should actually watch Serie A instead of hearing about it from the uninformed English media. Probably only heard if Donnarumma when he won the Euros and Pirlo when he panenka’d Joe Hart.

  21. Milan fans should get their heads checked. Donnarumma by the end of his career will be the next Buffon or Zoff! He has to work on his foot game though but has a lot of time to do that! Buffon made mistakes with his feet too. Zoff let in a shot from 40 meters out. Everyone makes errors.

  22. Why not?

Gigio has already shown to be superior to Gigi in PK’s. And this was before the Final.

Buffon was OK in PK’s, maybe a little better than that, but Donnarumma is clearly better.

Yes, his lack of foot work is an issue. The Madrid Foul/No Foul masked things but there are other examples.
