Sampdoria veteran Fabio Quagliarella left it late, but made history by finding the net in Serie A for the 18th consecutive season and 19th straight calendar year.

The 40-year-old hitman was making his 21st appearance of the campaign and so far had managed to contribute only an assist.

However, he was ready to sweep home the Alessandro Zanoli assist from 12 yards against Milan at San Siro and make his mark on this season, even if it will be doomed to relegation.

Only Quagliarella, Jose Altafini (18), Gianni Rivera (20), Silvio Piola (20), Roberto Mancini (18), Roberto Baggio (18) and Francesco Totti (23) have been able to score in 18 consecutive Serie A seasons.

The absolute record is held by Roma legend Totti, who found the net in 23 campaigns in a row, all in the Giallorossi jersey, from 1994 to 2016.

Quagliarella now has 182 Serie A goals in 554 games and the first at this level was the winner for Ascoli against Treviso on December 21, 2005.

It also means he is the fifth 40-year-old to score in Serie A after Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Alessandro Costacurta, Piola and Pietro Vierchowod.
