It is the end of an era, as Sampdoria have decided not to renew their contract with veteran striker Fabio Quagliarella. ‘I apologise, you saw me crying a lot lately.’

The 40-year-old had been with the club since 2016 and made 293 competitive appearances in the Blucerchiati jersey, scoring 106 goals and providing 27 assists.

His contract expired on June 30 and he had said he was ready to step up and sign a new deal, despite their relegation to Serie B.

However, it was announced this evening that Quagliarella had been released and it is now entirely possible he could opt for retirement.

Ironically, his final match for Samp and probably in Serie A was in his hometown, at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona against Scudetto winners Napoli.

Quagliarella said farewell with a touching message on Instagram, that included the banner of salute from the Napoli fans.

“Infinite emotions in a few days. The goal against Milan, the applause at San Siro and in Udine, the inseparable embrace with my fans in Genoa, seeing Samp rescued, the last game at the Maradona with Napoli the Champions of Italy and the homage from my fellow Neapolitans.

“I apologise, you saw me crying a lot… but these are the dreams you make since childhood. Thank you from my heart.

“With great affection, I repay all the love that I received from each one of you. Fabio.”

Quagliarella scored 182 goals in 556 Serie A appearances, representing Torino, Udinese, Ascoli, Udinese, Napoli, Juventus and Sampdoria.
