Antonio Conte has received some criticism for his use of substitutions, but Sky Sport Italia pundits explained why the Inter coach did nothing wrong against Roma.

Conte has been accused by Inter fans to have made defensive substitutions in the final minutes of Roma-Inter with his side that consequently sat too deep and allowed a late Gianluca Mancini equaliser.

“[Arturo] Vidal got injured and [Roberto] Gagliardini replaced him, Lautaro gave so much in 75 minutes, I wanted him to help the team in the defensive phase,” Conte explained after the final whistle.

“[Achraf] Hakimi run so much, he was losing the ball possession too frequently, we’ve played three games in a week, those players have always played and we have substitutions we can use.”

Sky Sport Italia pundits discussed Conte’s choices last night.

“Conte explained his choices,” said Beppe Bergomi.

“He wanted fresh players with physical strength, he could have made different choices, he could have not replaced Hakimi, but I don’t know if he was tired or not,” the former Inter defender continued.

“The substitutions made sense.”

“He didn’t make complicated substitutions,” continued Luca Marchegiani.

“That’s how substitutions are. Sometimes you sub on three players and they score one goal each, other times the team does not react as the coach would want.

“I’m only not convinced of his use of [Ivan] Perisic as a support striker. He’s not giving what the team would need.

“Maybe it would have been better to throw Alexis Sanchez in."

Alessandro Costacurta also believes Conte’s choices made sense.

“He even explained what he did, I think there is nothing more to say, we are talking about Conte.”
