The three Italy internationals were all on the bench, as Marco Verratti and Alessandro Florenzi were back from COVID, while Moise Kean had just recovered from injury.

The first leg ended 3-2 for PSG in Munich and this could easily have had even more goals, but the French side hit the woodwork three times – twice with Neymar – before Bayern took the lead with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting on the rebound from point-blank range.

This trend continued after the break, Neymar sliding in inches away from meeting Angel Di Maria’s assist after sensational work from Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.

There was some Italian representation, specifically referee Daniele Orsato and his team, but they were lambasted in the French media after Mbappé was incorrectly flagged offside when clear on goal, then the referee awarded a free kick for a foul on Keylor Navas when he seemed to clatter into teammate Leandro Paredes.

When Kean did come on, he wasted a promising move by firing over the bar, then Mbappé blasted into the roof of the net, but was marginally offside.

It remained wide open until the final whistle, but PSG go through on away goals and will face Manchester City or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final.

In the other game, Italy international Jorginho played the full 90 minutes for Chelsea in a 1-0 home defeat to FC Porto.

The tie was never in doubt, as the Blues had won 2-0 away in the first leg, but a spectacular stoppage-time Mehdi Taremi bicycle kick was at least some consolation.

Chelsea will play Real Madrid or Liverpool in the other semi-final.
