Ismael Bennacer’s season is over following a knee injury. Rafael Leao, Alessandro Florenzi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are injured, while Malick Thiaw is serving a one-match ban.
This means Pioli has little options to rotate at the Stadio Picco.
Spezia, currently in the relegation zone, are not in a better situation with Joao Moutinho, Emil Holm, Simone Bastoni, Daniel Maldini and Julius Beck injured, plus the suspended Kevin Agudelo.
Daniele Verde is favourite over Eldor Shomurodov to complete a front-three alongside Emanuel Gyasi and M’Bala Nzola who returns to the starting XI after a muscle injury.
Chelsea loanee Ethan Ampadu is expected to start in central midfield with Przemysław Wiśniewski and Dimitris Nikolaou in central defence.
