Italy look to Manuel Locatelli and Domenico Berardi for their Euro 2020 opener, while Turkey rely on Hakan Calhanoglu, but could prepare a Kaan Ayhan surprise new role.

The tournament begins on Friday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT) at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Stefano Sensi and now Lorenzo Pellegrini have pulled out of the squad with muscular injuries, while Marco Verratti is not fully recovered from a knee problem and probably won’t feature in the opening game.

That means Locatelli steps in again, having already played in the 4-0 friendly win over the Czech Republic last week, with Jorginho and Nicolò Barella.

There’s another Sassuolo player in the starting XI, as Domenico Berardi is likely to complete the trident attack with Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne, leaving Federico Chiesa for the next games.

According to Sky Sport Italia, a different Sassuolo player will play a special part in the Turkey squad, because Kaan Ayhan could be used as a defensive midfielder.

He is a defender for the Neroverdi, albeit with relatively little playing time this season, but in this case would partner West Brom’s Okay Yokuslu for a solid midfield to protect the defence.

That would allow Turkey to break up Italy’s midfield possession and immediately start rapid turnovers to create danger on the counter-attack.

That would be achieved with Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu, Kenan Karaman and Yusuf Yazici fanning out behind veteran Burak Yilmaz.

Another option in the trio would be Roma-owned Cengiz Under, who is off form after struggling for playing time at Leicester City.

Italy (probable): G Donnarumma; Florenzi, Bonucci, Chiellini, Spinazzola; Barella, Jorginho, Locatelli; Berardi, Immobile, Insigne

Turkey (probable): Cakir; Celik, Soyuncu, Demiral, Meras; Yokuslu, Ayhan; Karaman, Calhanoglu, Yazici; B Yilmaz
