Pressure mounts on Milan star Rafael Leao, who has been criticised by Portuguese and Italian media after a slow start to the season for club and country.

Milan and Portugal star Leao has had a poor start to the season for club and country despite one goal and one assist in three Serie A appearances with the Rossoneri.

The 25-year-old was subbed off in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Croatia on Thursday night, and even if Roberto Martinez insisted that it was a tactical decision, Portuguese media have been harsh on the Rossoneri winger.

Saturday’s Gazzetta, on page 20, reports that Leao didn’t register a single shot on target against Croatia, provided one key pass and had just one successful dribble.

Both Gazzetta and Tuttosport (page 21) report that A Bola rated Leao 5/10. The famous Portuguese newspaper noted that Leao ‘lacked confidence’ in his latest international appearance, which comes as no surprise to Italian fans and media.

It remains to be seen if Leao will start against Scotland tomorrow, but the media pressure on the 25-year-old is undoubtedly growing and will continue in the coming weeks when Milan will host Venezia at San Siro, trying to win their first competitive match this season, meet Liverpool in Champions League and Inter in a Serie A derby.

Leao has been in the spotlight in Italy this week, and he and Theo Hernandez refused to join their teammates and coach Paulo Fonseca for a cooling break against Lazio in the latest Serie A round, but the Rossoneri boss and CEO Giorgio Furlani have tried to play down controversy.

  1. Told ya, he’s i way overrated, he seems to be “great” at Milan because the rest are mediocre. Maybe only Morata & Theo stand out.
