A dark cloud has formed over Turin and one of the main figures of blame at Juventus is coach Massimiliano Allegri, who failed on every front this season.
By all accounts, the 2022-23 season was not a positive one for the Old Lady. The 10-point deduction leaves the club outside the top four spots, they failed to win a domestic trophy and disappointed in Europe, exiting the Champions League at the group stages and losing to Sevilla in the Europa League semi-finals.
Allegri’s position as head coach seems almost untenable, La Gazzetta dello Sport highlights, but his €7m net per season contract lasting until June 2025 can only keep him in the role for so long, with pressure continuing to mount.
Looking back at this season, the underlying numbers show why Allegri has become such a figure of blame. Juventus suffered 10 defeats in the league for the first time since the 2010-11 season, and only scored 55 goals – the lowest amount since the 2009-10 and 2010-11 campaigns.
The team have the highest wage bill in Serie A – €94.8m net – and have one of the highest paid coaches, yet failed to secure any silverware or put up any resistance to Napoli’s Scudetto charge.
Within the team structure, things are not much more positive for Allegri; the players have grown increasingly tired with his tactics, something that has been admitted by Wojciech Szczesny and Juan Cuadrado, and some of the star players like Federico Chiesa and Dusan Vlahovic have also grown frustrated.
After the defeat to Milan, Leonardo Bonucci and Danilo called an inter-squad meeting, wanting to try and fire up the players for their final game of the season.
