The Press Union has hit back at Roma Coach Luciano Spalletti for “unfounded, presumptuous and offensive” comments.

Spalletti referred to a Sport Mediaset reporter during yesterday’s Press conference, claiming he had given a “false” account of Radja Nainggolan’s reaction to a substitution, claiming he was trying to “make things twice as difficult” for Roma.

Today the Press Union released a statement criticising Spalletti for “worrying comments that emerge on a loop not just at Roma and damage the sacrosanct right to report and critique sanctioned by the law.

“Classifying the report of a colleague as untrue and above all purposefully damaging, specifically when the facts were confirmed via video evidence, means not having respect for our roles and hurling mud at reporters who every day correctly inform readers and viewers.

“We hope that when the Roma Coach, just as anyone else, makes such serious accusations, he can bring evidence of his theory.”

Another Union of Italian Sports Journalists released its own statement protesting that Spalletti’s “claim the reporter was purposefully trying to damage Roma was unfounded, presumptuous and above all offensive for a colleague who simply did his job.

“We invite Spalletti to have a more respectful attitude towards the reporters and urge clarification between the parties to close this ugly incident with dignity.”

It is the second clash between the Press Unions and Serie A clubs after Juventus refused two Gazzetta dello Sport writers Pres Passes to a game, seemingly in ‘revenge’ for a contested quote from Gigi Buffon.
