President of Italy Sergio Mattarella paid a special visit to the Stadio Barbera today to honour Palermo as they climb back towards the top flight after bankruptcy.

Mattarella has been head of state since January 2015 and started his second term in January 2022.

He was already going to be in Sicily for the Easter festivities and so decided to swing round and visit his hometown club, having been born in Palermo in July 1941.

Palermo went bankrupt in 2019 after years of financial and legal difficulties, forced to begin again from Serie D.

In July 2022, City Football Group became majority shareholders, the same company that also runs Manchester City, NYCFC, Girona and more.

Mattarella visited the Palermo Museum and met with the squad at the Stadio Barbera this morning.

The Rosanero are in Serie B this season and currently in ninth place, hoping to be in the promotion play-offs.
