Italy boss Cesare Prandelli called Antonio Cassano on Saturday night to comfort him, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Sampdoria have asked to rescind Cassano's contract after his 'gravely offensive and disrespectful' behaviour towards Riccardo Garrone.

Cassano's international future is now in doubt as if Sampdoria get support for their decision, he will also be unable to play for Italy.

La Gazzetta understands that Prandelli told Cassano that he remains one of the cornerstones of his Italy squad.
