Cesare Prandelli believes Italy are “just a step away from becoming a great team” despite their setback against Uruguay.

The Azzurri ended their 2011 with a 1-0 home defeat to the Copa America holders last night.

“We are just a step away from becoming a real team. A great team,” the Coach told news agency ANSA.

“I liked our reaction, both on the field and in the locker room. Instead of running off home after the match, the lads stayed behind and discussed why we had lost.

“Italy are like a club and we can still improve. Perhaps we’ve forgotten where we started from in the summer of 2010, but at Euro 2012 we want to fight it out with everyone.”

The Azzurri have been placed in the second pot for the European Championship draw on December 2.
