Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou is pleased with Destiny Udogie’s contract extension and insists the Italian defender sees Spurs ‘as a good place for his future.’

Udogie signed a new long-term deal in North London earlier this week, extending his stay at the club until June 2030.

He had joined Spurs from Udinese last summer and has made 14 appearances with his new club this term, scoring his first goal for Tottenham last week in a 4-1 win over Newcastle.

“I’m really pleased with Destiny’s signing, obviously,” Postecoglou said at a press conference on Friday, as quoted by Football-London.

“This is the first phase of us trying to build something and the core of the group is fairly young and new to the Premier League. Destiny committing to us is an endorsement of what he sees as a good place for his future. It’s his first year in the Premier League, he’s adapting to a new role.

“He understands that he’s a willing worker in trying to improve himself, but he’s also made an impact, which is the big thing for us. Great to have him commit to the club long-term. It’s something we want to continue to build on and hopefully keep the core of this group together for the coming years to build something special.”

Udogie said after signing his contract extension that he’s felt at home since the very first day he joined Tottenham last summer. Spurs secured a deal to sign him in the summer of 2022 but kept him on loan at Udinese last season.

Juventus and Inter were among the clubs interested in signing the 21-year-old last year, but Spurs were quicker in reaching an agreement with the Friulani.

Udogie made his senior Italy debut under new Azzurri coach Luciano Spalletti in October, coming on as a substitute in a 4-0 win over North Macedonia. He started his first Italy game against England at Wembley Stadium on October 17, 2023.
