Matteo Politano was forced off the pitch in the first half of Napoli’s pre-season friendly against Girona due to an injury.
The 29-year-old Italian forward has not had an easy summer in Campania, seemingly looking for a move away from the club after a tough season under Luciano Spalletti. Politano was heavily linked with a move to Gennaro Gattuso’s Valencia, but this ultimately never materialised.
As highlighted by Calciomercato.com, Politano seemingly suffered a left calf injury after 20 minutes in today’s pre-season friendly between Napoli and Girona. Spalletti was forced to replace him with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
The Italian forward will now undergo a round of tests to determine the seriousness of the issue, giving Spalletti something to be concerned about ahead of the rapidly approaching Serie A season. Napoli’s opening match is against Hellas Verona on August 15.
Last season, Politano scored three goals and provided four assists in 33 league appearances.
