The Nerazzurri have agreed a deal to sign Shaqiri from Bayern Munich, with the Swiss international expected in Milan tonight ahead of a medical tomorrow.

“Shaqiri? There’s no doubt he’s a very good player,” Podolski told assembled media at his own official unveiling.

“In Bavaria and at the World Cup he’s shown what he can do, he’ll be a reinforcement for us.”

The German international arrived at San Siro this month on a six month loan deal from English side Arsenal, and has given his reasons for leaving the Gunners.

“I’d first like to thank Arsenal, my time there was wonderful.

“However, I wasn’t playing much, so I decided to move. Inter offered me a chance, and [Coach Roberto] Mancini and [sporting director Piero] Ausilio convinced me.

“From day one I’ve felt good here, we’ll see what will happen starting from the first home game, with our goal being third place.

“We are able to achieve the goal of returning to the Champions League. The Coach wants it and we want it.

“We have to make up some points in the next few games but we can do it.

“We’d all be disappointed if we didn’t make the Champions League, because Inter are one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“The situation is not ideal, but if we all stick together we can make third place, there’s only eight points in it.

“Will I stay longer? It’s hard to say, since I’ve only just arrived.

“I’ve only played one game in Serie A, my goal is to help Inter in the next five or six months.

“Then there will be talks between Arsenal and Inter and we’ll see. For now we have to focus on the future without opening up other issues.

“All that counts is what I do as a footballer, the rest is secondary.”
