Gianluca Scamacca’s first Italy goal was not enough for the Azzurri to avoid a defeat against England. Check out player ratings for Tuesday’s Euro 2024 qualifying fixture at Wembley Stadium.

Donarumma 6 – Kane sent him the wrong way from the spot. He couldn’t do much to avoid the other two goals.

Di Lorenzo 5 – Many forward runs to overlap Berardi. Delivered the assist for Scamacca, but caused a penalty for England too. Struggled defensively.

Scalvini 5 – Accidental clash of heads with Bellingham in the first half. The Atalanta defender faced England’s star strikers without fear but was easily beaten by Kean for England’s third goal.

Acerbi 5.5 – Very good first half. The Inter defender kept a high line and pressed England’s strikers continuously. It didn’t last 90 minutes, but it’s understandable. (63′ Bastoni 4.5)

Udogie 6.5 – Was involved in Italy’s opener by linking up with El Shaarawy. Came close to scoring his first Italy goal in his senior debut as a starter. (63′ Dimarco 5.5)

Barella 5.5 – Not his best game for Italy. Had a lot of defensive work to do.

Cristante 5.5 – Provided key help to Scalvini and Acerbi in the first half but struggled to cope with England’s pressing in the second half.

Frattesi 5 – Lacked quality in the final pass and disappeared after the break.

Berardi 5.5 – Could have been braver at times, but he showed his quality with some perfectly-timed passes, like one in the build-up of Scamacca’s goal. (79′ Raspadori N/A)

Scamacca 6.5 – Couldn’t choose a better place to score his first Italy goal. (63′ Kean 5.5)

El Shaarawy 6 – Excellent first half. Helped Udogie defensively and didn’t waste possession in the final third. Like many of his teammates, he didn’t do much in the second half. (87′ Orsolini N/A).

Coach: Spalletti 6 – First defeat as Italy coach. The Azzurri handled the ball wisely when they had it and had more chances than England in the first half. They couldn’t keep it up for 90 minutes and England always looked in control after the break.

England: Pickford 7; Walker 6, Stones 6.5 (64′ Guehi 6), Maguire 6, Trippier 6.5; Phillips 5.5 (70′ Henderson 6), Rice 6; Foden 6.5, Bellingham 8 (Grealish N/A), Rashford 7; Kane 7.5. Coach: Southgate 6.5.

  1. With no retegui, zaniolo, tonali and Chiesa, a difficult game was to be expected. And what you also expect is a referee to uphold the standards for the occasion. Three stonewall yellow cards for Phillips, and yet he had the luxury to be substituted. Turpin will be knighted no doubt.
