The Serie A match between Cagliari and Napoli had to be suspended for seven minutes after the two sets of fans hurled objects at each other.

There were circa 400 Partenopei fans at the Unipol Domus in Sardinia and the trouble erupted after Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s effort took a big deflection off Yerry Mina to wrongfoot Simone Scuffet.

Napoli banner sparks anger

According to Sky Sport Italia, an insulting banner sparked an angry reaction from the home supporters.

There has long been a bitter rivalry between the two sets of fans, which was further enflamed when Napoli ultras placed a banner on the ferry as they arrived today: ‘Hunting sheep.’

Just before the trouble erupted in the stadium, they also had a banner refencing sheep noises.

Sardinia is known for its sheep farming.

They began to throw objects at each other across the barriers and railings, then the Cagliari ultras made it impossible to continue with a series of fireworks and smoke bombs hurled into the penalty area with their own goalkeeper.

Play was halted for at least six minutes and players from both teams appealed to the supporters to calm the situation down.
