Former UEFA President Michel Platini is still opposed to VAR. “I said it from day one, football cannot be arbitrated by video.”

Platini was speaking to Il Corriere dello Sport on an array of issues and was asked for his opinion on VAR, which has drawn criticism across Europe.

“I said it from day one, I didn’t keep it to myself, I declared my opposition to technology, especially if it’s used in this way,” Platini told Il Corriere.

“I said it from day one, I didn’t keep it to myself, I declared my opposition to technology, especially if it’s used in this way,” Platini told Il Corriere.

“Football can’t be arbitrated by video. Television distorts the whole perception of individual incidents.

“Football is a contact sport, there are regular interventions which, if passed through the filter of TV and slowed down, lead to unacceptable interpretations.

“A foul must be assessed and judged in real time.”

The system has been criticised by some for taking too long to make decisions, and Platini says the game as a spectacle is suffering.

“VAR also kills the excitement of the goal, it obliges the player to celebrate it five minutes later and sometimes even twice.

“For a more equal game, VAR is not needed, but better referees. The controversy of technology is not just confined to Italy, but also to England, Spain and Germany."
