David Pizarro reveals he urged Fiorentina to sign Lucas Torreira and considers the Arsenal-owned midfielder ‘ideal’ for their style of football.

The 26-year-old is currently at the Stadio Franchi on loan from Arsenal with a reported option to buy set at €15m.

He rediscovered his form in Florence, with four goals and one assist in 25 Serie A appearances so far this season.

“I really like Torreira, but he is a very different player to the one I was,” former Fiorentina, Roma, Inter, Udinese and Manchester City star Pizarro told Brivido Sportivo.

“He is having a great season after a few years in which he was unable to express himself to the full. He is returning to the performance levels we saw at Sampdoria.

“I had advised Fiorentina director Daniele Pradè to sign Torreira a while back. He is a modern midfielder, always goes at max speed and I hope he will remain in Florence. I was sure he’d be an ideal player for Fiorentina.”

Uruguay international Torreira spent most of his career in Italy, first coming to the Pescara youth academy in 2014.

He went on to play for Pescara, Sampdoria, Arsenal, another loan with Atletico Madrid and now Fiorentina.

Torreira was sold to Arsenal in the summer of 2018 for over €28m, but failed to settle in London with the Gunners.
