The snow is coming down heavily in Bergamo, putting the Champions League showdown with Villarreal at risk.

It is meant to kick off at the Gewiss Stadium at 20.00 GMT.

However, the snow has been heavier than predicted and started to really come down an hour ago, at which point the covers had already been removed from the pitch.

The local staff have put red lines down over the white ones so they will be visible through the snow.

However, another pitch inspection will be performed by referee Anthony Taylor at circa 19.30 GMT, half-an-hour before the match is due to begin.

If the snow makes play impossible, it’s likely the game will be postponed to tomorrow.

This is a crucial match for both clubs, as if Atalanta win, they will go through to the Champions League Round of 16 at the expense of Villarreal.

A defeat for the Bergamo side, and Young Boys beating Manchester United, would put Atalanta bottom and knock them out of Europe completely.
