Their coach was given the Golden Tapir award from comedy show Striscia La Notizia, which is handed out to people who had a bad week in the news.
“Hopefully we’ll make up for it next year,” said Pirlo.
There was a great deal of criticism aimed at Cristiano Ronaldo for his performance, including his odd reaction in the wall during the decisive free kick.
“It’s not just that. We made other mistakes that cost us qualification. I let the journalists give their verdict on Ronaldo, for me he is always 7, the number on his shirt.”
Pirlo last received the Tapiro d’Oro in October following another costly defeat.

‘Eating the panettone’ is an Italian phrase meaning he’ll still be in the job at Christmas to have the traditional dessert.
Colomba is the equivalent baked goods eaten at Easter.
