Milan coach Stefano Pioli assures he has the best interests of his players at heart, so is ‘cheering on France to go all the way’ in the World Cup.

Les Bleus have two Rossoneri players regularly in their starting XI, Theo Hernandez and Olivier Giroud, while Mike Maignan was forced to miss out due to injury.

While many coaches would want their players back in training as soon as possible before Serie A resumes on January 4, Pioli isn’t one of them.

“I hope France win the World Cup and I am cheering them on to go all the way, because I support my players,” he said when receiving the Gigi Simoni award for fair play and sportsmanship.

“I am in contact to see how they are doing, especially after a game. That’s the only rule really, otherwise they’re in trouble!”

Milan also have Rafael Leao of Portugal still in the competition in Qatar and Pioli explains why he doesn’t mind if they are late back.

“I find it is easier to work with players who are happy and satisfied.”
