Stefano Pioli explains why Sandro Tonali is not yet a regular starter for Milan and insists Juventus are the favourite to win the Serie A title this season.

“Tonali had a rather difficult summer, he is a player with great quality and great perspective, he has a sense of position and is suitable for fast play,” Pioli told Radio Rai on Monday.

“For me, he is a starter and I am lucky to have many of them in this team. Our investments concern the present and the future.”

Stefano Pioli explains why Sandro Tonali is not yet a regular starter for Milan and insists Juventus are the favourite to win the Serie A title this season.

All the eyes, however, are on Zlatan Ibrahimovic who scored a brace in Saturday’s derby win against Inter.

“He’s giving us so much and his teammates recognize it,” said Pioli who also discussed the rumours about a possible contract extension of the Swede.

“It’s hard to think about the future, I don’t think Ibra himself is thinking about it. We must instead think of the present.

“What matters now is that he is happy, I do not think it is the right time to move forward.”

Milan are now the table leaders in Serie A but Pioli is convinced Juventus are still the favourite to win the title.

"For me they are always the favourite. The began a new cycle, it will take some time, even if there is less and less time in football.”

The Rossoneri will face Celtic in their Europa League debut this season on Thursday and the Milan tactician did also discuss the Covid situation in Italy and in Serie A.

"Unfortunately, the situation is not easy for anyone, we are in the hands of professionals, we have a very precise protocol and, even in this, we are privileged, because we are controlled almost daily.

“What we can do, like all citizens, is follow the rules, keep our distance and use masks. We hope that the situation will improve as soon as possible".
