The pressure is already growing on Milan to sack Paulo Fonseca and a surprising detail emerged, as Stefano Pioli is still under contract, costing the club €1m per month.
It has been a dire start to the new era under the Portuguese tactician, managing only two points from the opening three Serie A rounds.
The defence has been particularly disastrous, conceding six goals so far from Torino, Parma and Lazio.
There are already calls in the media and from fans to consider a change of direction, especially considering that Fonseca’s original arrival was not exactly greeted with enthusiasm at the end of a long, tortuous casting process.
Milan still paying for Pioli and Fonseca
When it comes to potential replacements, Milan might have one already on file, because it emerged that despite negotiations, they never terminated Pioli’s contract.
He was fired at the end of last season, but the contract continues to run and he is being paid €7.5m gross (€4m net) until June 2025.
On top of that, Fonseca has a contract to June 2027 that is worth €4.7m gross (€2.5m net).
If Milan were to sack Fonseca, they’d either have to bring Pioli back or pay for a third different coach.
As things stand, the club is paying €1m per month gross in wages just for coaches – excluding assistant staff.
