New Palermo Coach Stefano Pioli has pledged to adopt “a versatile approach to total football.”

The tactician was officially presented to the media this weekend after replacing Delio Rossi, who notoriously had problems with President Maurizio Zamparini's interference.

“Everyone has their role and works within their area of expertise,” said ex-Chievo boss Pioli.

“I have already spoken to President Zamparini and every meeting has been very positive. I'm sure there will be moments when our opinions contrast, but that is normal.

“I want a versatile approach to total football, where everyone must be active in attacking and defending. I want players with enthusiasm who are ready to sacrifice themselves for the team.

“We need men of quality, but also the right attitude, as without that you'll get nowhere. I don't know if I'll use a three-man defence yet.”

Palermo finished in eighth place, but reached the Europa League thanks to their Coppa Italia Finalist status against Inter.

“What are our objectives? Well, we wouldn't be happy with ninth or tenth place…”

Zamparini said Javier Pastore has only a 10 per cent chance of staying at the Stadio Barbera this season, while Fabrizio Miccoli's future is also in doubt.

“Miccoli can fit into all our tactical systems and has real quality. I'd like to be able to train Pastore.”
