Pioli: ‘Not bothered by Simeone’

Stefano Pioli dismisses Diego Simeone’s confession that he’ll Coach Inter one day – “we both have to concentrate on our work”.

When the Italian replaced Frank de Boer, his appointment was seen by many as a stopgap until the Nerazzurri could appoint Simeone.

This week the Atletico Madrid Coach admitted that he’ll move to San Siro one day, and the current incumbent was asked about those words ahead of the Sparta Prague match.

“I just think about the real situation,” Pioli shrugged.

“That [situation] is that I Coach and Inter and he Coaches Atletico. We both have to stay focused and concentrate on our work.”

The Beneamata are out of the Europa League already, is tomorrow’s match a nuisance?

“It’s an opportunity for the lads who have played less, as well as a chance to get back to winning ways and honour a European competition.

“We’re very determined and eager to do well. We know we had the wrong approach [in the defeat to Napoli], which will be a lesson for the future after the positive signs in previous matches.

“Now we have to get back to winning, starting tomorrow night and Sunday.

“Unfortunately the Europa League is gone, it’s an important competition and the squad worked hard to qualify for it last year.

“We’re not even halfway through the season though, there are a lot of points and we have the potential to win a lot of matches.

“There’s also the Coppa Italia, we have to work hard and believe in ourselves.”

Despite the 3-0 thrashing at Napoli on Friday night, the Coach maintains his team is on the right track.

“I didn’t like our approach in Naples,” Pioli admitted.

“I think we’re working well and it disappoints me when the players don’t show on the pitch what we do well here every day.

“All the conditions are in place here to work well, it’s a positive thing which can help us construct a great future.”
