Stefano Pioli admits Milan didn’t expect to win the Serie A title so early: ‘2022 was a year full of satisfaction.’

The Italian tactician released a lengthy interview with Sport Mediaset, which will be aired in full on December 29.

“Obviously, we reached this prestigious target before we thought because the club desired to invest in young players, so we expected to win a bit later,” said Pioli.

“On the other hand, we managed to do so immediately and clearly, 2022 was a year full of satisfaction for us all.”

The Rossoneri won their first Serie A title in 11 years last season, finishing two points above city rivals Inter.

They are now eight points behind leaders Napoli, the only unbeaten team in Italy’s top flight.

“We must think that we can still win the title, absolutely. If Napoli continue like this, they’ll earn more than 100 points, so we’ll have to congratulate them,” said Pioli.

“Right now, we should only think about earning many points. Last year we needed 86, this season it could be more.

“There are still 69 available, it’s a lot and we must believe we can make it.”

Milan resume the season on January 4 against Salernitana at the Stadio Arechi, while Napoli visit Inter at the Stadio Meazza.

Milan and Napoli met at San Siro in September and the Partenopei sealed a 2-1 win thanks to Matteo Politano’s and Giovanni Simeone’s goals.

January will be a very busy month for the Rossoneri who will also make their season debut in Coppa Italia and face Inter in the Supercoppa clash on January 18.
