Stefano Pioli admits it ‘can’t just be bad luck’ as Milan suffer another two muscular injuries, taking their tally to 16 for the season.

The Rossoneri are struggling badly in both Serie A and the Champions League, as while they got back on track midweek by beating PSG 2-1, they fumbled a 2-0 lead today for the 2-2 draw at Lecce.

To make matters worse, Rafael Leao limped off in the opening eight minutes, followed by Davide Calabria at half-time, both of them suffering from adductor issues.

This is the 16th different muscular injury sustained by Milan players this season.

“It is true that we have a lot of these injuries and I honestly cannot explain it,” said Pioli in his press conference.

“It can’t just be bad luck at this point. Playing so often, the physical and mental stress levels are raised and this can affect the players.”

Decades ago, when the club was still owned by Silvio Berlusconi, the Milan Lab was founded with the express intention of constantly monitoring individual players, preventing muscular injuries before they were able to do serious damage.

Nonetheless, the vast majority of the Milan setbacks have been muscular in nature, which points the finger of blame towards the training methods.

Including all types of injuries, there have been 22 different setbacks in the Milan squad this season.
