With Ruben Loftus-Cheek out injured, Stefano Pioli admits he has a few doubts regarding the Milan midfield against Borussia Dortmund, hinting it all depends on Tijani Reijnders.

It kicks off at the Signal Iduna Park on Wednesday at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

Loftus-Cheek has not made the trip, joining Rade Krunic, Ismael Bennacer, Pierre Kalulu and Mattia Caldara on the treatment table.

It leaves the coach with relatively few options for the midfield, but the wild card could be Reijnders, who can play in a few different roles.

“Where Reijnders plays depends on the mezz’ala that I want to use,” explained Pioli in his press conference.

“If I want a mezz’ala who pushes forward and breaks through the lines, then Yunus Musah could play in front of the defence, otherwise it will be Reijnders.”

When it was put to him that Yacine Adli would be dropped to the bench after two consecutive Serie A starts, Pioli was surprised.

“Who says he will be on the bench? I have four midfielders, three of them will start and one can then come off the bench.”

Sky Sport Italia report that Tommaso Pobega and Musah will be the midfielders flanking Reijnders, who takes the playmaker role in front of the defence.

Milan (probable): Maignan; Calabria, Thiaw, Tomori, Theo Hernandez; Musah, Reijnders, Pobega; Pulisic, Giroud, Leao
