Pioli: ‘Fiorentina have to attack’

Stefano Pioli says Fiorentina must be “intense and aggressive” against Roma even if “we’re talking about a team that got to the Champions League semi-final”.

The Viola welcome Eusebio Di Francesco’s side to the Artemio Franchi tomorrow night, with the two sides level on points.

“It’s the first big team we’ve faced at home,” Pioli noted in his pre-match Press conference.

The Viola welcome Eusebio Di Francesco’s side to the Artemio Franchi tomorrow night, with the two sides level on points.

“It’s the first big team we’ve faced at home,” Pioli noted in his pre-match Press conference.

“They’re a great team who have always finished second or third in recent seasons. Our goal is to improve on last season, do better and play attacking football.

“In the last game we did not have the right approach and if we can not give precise passes to our attackers than we have problems in the final third.

“Tomorrow it’ll be important to play precise football, without making mistakes.

“Tomorrow we’ll need to suffer, we’ve been good at playing on par with our opponents but we’re talking about a team that got to the Champions League semi-final.

“Roma are a team who play with a high defensive line so we’ll need to be very good.

“If we can be intense and aggressive we can get it forward quickly and hurt them. We have a lot of players who can make those key passes.

“We’ll be playing against a team that wants to dominate the play, but we’ll need to be good at managing their strength.

“We need to be on the front foot and play the Fiorentina way, according to our concepts. Sometimes opponents stop you playing as you want to, but we’ve never stopped trying to do that.

“Tomorrow we need to give our best and never stop, and we need to be more dangerous because we’ve been less so recently.

“We’ve prepared well because Roma are a very physical team, so we need to be careful not to give them dead balls.”
