Having started Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Saturday for the 4-2 win over nine-man Bologna, the Swede is this evening benched in favour of Giroud.

“I have chosen the XI that give me the most guarantees right now. It’s Olivier’s turn and we are ready for a difficult challenge,” Pioli told DAZN.

The injury list remains extensive, but Theo Hernandez is back in the squad after recovering from COVID-19, albeit on the bench.

“Theo was at home for 10 days, he followed a personalised training programme and is doing fairly well. We hope he can help, if he is needed.”

Brahim Diaz was given the all-clear today and should return at the weekend.

Milan are joint Serie A leaders with Napoli, as both picked up eight wins and a draw in the opening nine rounds of the season.

“The sentiment we are riding right now is enthusiasm. Every game is an important step and we must give our all.”
