Stefano Pioli announces Mike Maignan will return against Sassuolo tomorrow, while Fikayo Tomori could be back on Wednesday.

Milan host Sassuolo at San Siro at 14.00 UK time tomorrow.

The French goalkeeper has recovered after a wrist injury and will start tomorrow.

“Mike feels well, he has been training with the team since Saturday, he is ready and recovered quick thanks to his incredible mentality,” the Italian tactician said.

The France international underwent surgery on October 13 and was supposed to remain out of action for ten weeks.

Milan announced last month that Maignan had to have his wrist immobilised in a cast for six weeks before beginning the rehabilitation process. However, the 26-year-old has already returned to group training and is ready to play tomorrow.

“Tomorrow, he will play. I am happy with what Tatarusanu did, but Mike returns tomorrow,” Pioli confirmed.

“Tomori is feeling better, he is not ready for tomorrow, but he could return on Wednesday.”

However, Ante Rebic remains out of action with ankle problems and Rafael Leao will start at left winger.

“He [Rebic] is an important player, but we need to be balanced and have clear ideas,” the Milan coach said.

“Commitment is the most important thing, more than those who play. If these players are here it’s because they have important qualities.”

The Rossoneri return to the pitch early next week, visiting Andriy Shevchenko’s Genoa.

The Italian tactician signed a one-year contract extension with the club yesterday.

“The club and I have the same ambition,” he explained.

“We want to bring Milan back to the competitions we deserve. We want to be competitive again to win the Scudetto and return to the top in Europe.

“Now, we need to raise the level and become even more competitive. It’s important to have passion for what we do and have the desire to win every match.

“The team has always been balanced. We know we made mistakes against Fiorentina, but against Atletico, we played simple and we didn’t misplace easy passes. Il will be crucial to winning duels.

“Tomorrow, we need to play simple again and avoid errors.”
