Roma CEO Guido Fienga has claimed the decision to suspend Gianluca Petrachi was ‘inevitable’, as the Giallorossi ‘wanted to avoid’ such an outcome.

The sporting director was officially suspended of his duties last night and reports in Italian media claims he has refused to leave the club on mutual terms.

Fienga has temporarily taken over the transfer negotiations, as the rapport between Petrachi and President James Pallotta exploded into a furious row over the phone last week.

The chief executive has claimed Petrachi has ‘participated in the development’ at Roma confessed the public comments and the private conversations made it clear they could not carry on their collaboration with the former Torino director.

“We don’t believe that Roma are getting hurt. We are convinced in our project of growth and rely on men who know how to interpret it,” Fienga told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “We would have liked to avoid the decision to suspend the sporting director, but evidently it was inevitable, having broken a relationship of trust, which is the basis of any relationship.

“Petrachi has participated in the development of this project but a misalignment of the roles and the relationship with the management at the club had become evident, especially in the latest public and private externalisations.

“In any case, the misalignment does not concern the transfer market issues at all.”

Roma are preparing to resume against Sampdoria on June 24 and the CEO admitted he would have liked to avoid such a scenario as football started again this month.

“Believe me, we would have preferred to avoid such a decision one week after the resumption of the season, especially considering the effort we made to resume.

“Obviously, it wasn’t possible."
