The Biancocelesti booked their spot in the Round of 32 with a 2-0 victory away to Legia Warsaw this evening.
They could also top Group J if they beat Trabzonspor in the final game at the Stadio Olimpico.
“There are many positives from this away win, starting from qualification and the possibility of finishing top in the group,” Petkovic told Sky Sport Italia.
“Considering what has been happening to us recently, the team showed character and joy in its football. Our objective this season is just to work day by day, as it’s not helpful to look too far into the future. We certainly want to do well and that is the important thing.
“I liked the way the team played, as the youngsters are supported by the more experienced players. It’s a shame that it only ended 2-0, as we could’ve had a bigger scoreline.”
The Coach has repeatedly been linked with the Switzerland bench once the 2014 World Cup has been completed.
“You have all talked about my future enough, I will not get anyone into the headlines. I certainly have a contract until June and am concentrated only on Lazio.”
