Mattia Perin admits he thought about retiring after two devastating knee injuries and a shoulder issue. “I’d stop playing if I couldn’t target the Italy squad.”

The Juventus-owned goalkeeper is currently back on loan at Genoa and trying to get some regular playing time after a disastrous spell.

“I’d stop playing if I couldn’t target a regular place in the Italy squad, because the Nazionale is my biggest sporting aspiration,” Perin told Luca Toni in an Instagram Live chat.

“When I no longer feel that fire burning inside me, that is the day I will quit. To be honest, after two ACL tears and two operations on my shoulder, I did have to think about a few things.”

He is still only 27 years old, but made his Serie A debut playing for Genoa in May 2011, aged 18.
