Atalanta President Antonio Percassi said Gian Piero Gasperini could ‘renew his contract’ at the Gewiss Stadium and vowed to ‘try to improve the team’.
La Dea have qualified for the Champions League for the third consecutive season and prepare for the Coppa Italia Final against Juventus on Wednesday.
Percassi reassured fans that Gasperini will continue at the helm and revealed he could extend beyond the current deal until June 2022.
“We never thought about parting with Gasperini,” Percassi told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “He has always shown he is grateful and we will continue with him.
“To be honest, we could even renew his contract. As for the team we will try to improve it, we are working on it.
“However, given the level of our ‘reserves’, we could even ask to can play in 18.”
Ahead of the clash with Juventus, Percassi revealed he was ‘upset’ by the Bianconeri patron Andrea Agnelli’s attempt to create a Super League.
“I was upset, but he immediately called me and my son Luca, he explained to us that he had been misunderstood,” Percassi revealed.
“For me, the discussion was closed at that point. The Super League? An absurdity, everyone’s reaction was clear. It’s an idea to be archived.”
After having secured a place in the Champions League next term, the Orobici can focus on the Coppa Italia Final without any distractions.
“A trophy is a prize above all for the fans,” he said. “Being able to raise it has a symbolic value for a provincial side like ours.
“But returning to the Final after two years means that we are working well.”
But he doesn’t want to choose between winning the Coppa Italia or qualifying for the Champions League.
“The Coppa Italia has a more sentimental weight, and the Champions League a more practical value.”
Atalanta picked up a 1-0 win over Juventus in April and are unbeaten in three against the Old Lady, but Percassi admitted he didn’t expect Andrea Pirlo’s men to be fighting for a place in the top four at this point.
“I don’t see it as an opportunity to get close to them, but as a sign of improvement in our club,” he continued. “Year after year, for the whole system.
“Against Juventus, I was left with the impression of a team that wanted to make a good impression and did so.
“We had Juve in front of us but looked at them without fear. I didn’t expect it [Juventus to fall], but it’s not up to me to judge.
“They will return to their levels soon. They are very strong, have great experience and is used to playing decisive games.”
