Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi assured this is “the most important day in the history of this club” after reaching the Champions League last 16.

The small club from Bergamo had never even been in this tournament before, but after three opening defeats, still navigated through the group phase with tonight’s decisive 3-0 victory at Shakhtar Donetsk.

“It’s hard to believe, I still can’t get my head round what we achieved,” Percassi told Sky Sport Italia.

“The odds were really against us, we had a very small chance of going through, and yet we did it thanks to an extraordinary performance.

“It was emotional watching Atalanta win in such a difficult situation. I am very happy for my father Antonio, the club President who has been a lifelong Atalanta fan and started in their youth academy.

“From tomorrow, we get back to work, but tonight let us enjoy the most important day in the history of this club.”
