Atalanta patron Antonio Percassi doesn’t aim for the Scudetto and believes the Orobici have already done ‘extraordinary things’, before he explained why La Dea had to sell Cristian Romero to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Nerazzurri are preparing for their third consecutive season in the Champions League under Gian Piero Gasperini and the expectations are growing with every year in Bergamo.

The patron, however, doesn’t want to talk about winning Serie A and points at the excellent results already achieved.

“I would like to stop talking about the Scudetto,” Percassi told L’Eco di Bergamo. “We are Atalanta and we have just won three consecutive League titles, winning the group stage of the Champions League three times.

“And two more, plus a third Final two months ago, we won with the Primavera. That’s OK with us, we’re doing extraordinary things, we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.”

Percassi: ‘Atalanta have improved since Gomez left’

The Orobici President said the 2021-22 season will be ‘very interesting’, with six teams competing for the title.

“I see a more balanced Serie A,” he said. “The sales of Inter and Juventus and the growth of their opponents have brought them closer.

“It will be a very interesting season, in my opinion there are six teams that can win the Scudetto. The step is really short. The fight for the European positions will hold some surprises in my opinion.”

Atalanta sold Cristian Romero to Tottenham Hotspur and replaced him with Juventus defender Merih Demiral this summer, the President explained why he was allowed to leave after only one season.

“We are Atalanta and at certain figures Atalanta have a duty to sell,” he said. “The operation allowed us to make investments of more than €60m.

“Without the sale of Romero, it wouldn’t have been possible to expand our workforce in all departments. It’s our philosophy that we will always carry forward.”
