Chievo striker Sergio Pellissier is the sixth-oldest player to find the net in Serie A, aged 39 years and 178 days, his 16th straight season on target.

The forward got his first start of the season in today’s 3-1 defeat to Milan at San Siro and promptly found the back of the net with a consolation goal.

That was his 109th goal in 443 Serie A appearances, but more importantly means Pellissier has scored at least once in each of his 16 top flight campaigns.

The first was in Chievo’s 1-0 victory away to Parma all the way back on November 3, 2002, when he was only 23 years, six months and 22 days old.

Ever since that day, Pellissier has made his mark in every single Serie A season.

This goal also means that he is the sixth-oldest player to score in Italy’s most prestigious tournament.

He is a mere baby compared to Paolo Maldini (39 years and 278 days in Milan’s 2-1 win over Atalanta on March 30, 2008) and Francesco Totti (39 years and 364 days in Roma’s trip to Torino on September 25, 2016).

In third place is defender Pietro Vierchowod, who was in the 1982 World Cup winning Italy squad, yet still scored for Piacenza against Salernitana on May 23, 1999, at the age of 40 years and 47 days.

Going further back is Silvio Piola, who scored the last of his all-time record 274 Serie A goals on February 7, 1954.

During Novara’s 1-1 draw with Milan, he made his mark aged 40 years and 131 days.

However, the oldest player ever to score in Serie A was Alessandro ‘Billy’ Costacurta, who was allowed to take a penalty for Milan in his final career match against Udinese on May 19, 2007.

The centre-back hung up his boots at the age of 41 years and 25 days with this 3-2 defeat.
