Lorenzo Pellegrini showed his gratitude to coach Claudio Ranieri, who protected him from some of the vicious criticism from Roma fans, after scoring on his comeback.
See how the game unfolds on the Liveblog.
The captain had featured only once under Ranieri’s tenure, the debut defeat to Napoli on November 24.
This was because the midfielder had been targeted by some fans who blamed him for their difficult campaign and specifically the dismissal of Daniele De Rossi.

Ranieri noted that the player had been “sad” and felt “the weight of Roma on his shoulders,” so would only be let back onto the pitch once he rediscovered his “smile.”
That approach worked, because Pellegrini was back in the starting XI against SC Braga this evening in the Europa League and scored the opening goal on Nicola Zalewski’s assist.
He ran over to give Ranieri and warm hug on the touchline.
