The Azzurri had taken the lead through that goal, but Donny van de Beek snatched an equaliser before half-time.

“I think everyone feels at ease in this squad and that is one of our great strengths. The staff and players did well to create this family feeling.

“I am happy with the goal and the performance, it’s just a shame we were unable to get the victory,” Pellegrini told RAI Sport.

The Roma midfielder scored the opening goal, running on to an inspired pass from Inter talent Barella.

“I was right in line with the defenders and Nicolò did really well to spot me there, as I was somewhat hidden. I am glad that I managed to score, especially as it had been quite a while since I’d found the net.

“We had many more chances after my goal to increase our lead and were just a little bit unlucky, so we hope that can turn soon, as we need to win the next game with Poland.

“That will be fundamental for the table, as if we win that match, basically we’ll secure top spot.”

Poland are now top of their Nations League group on seven points, followed by Italy with six and the Netherlands five.
